Why Your CPD Certificates Aren't Enough: The Pathway to Level 7 Aesthetics

# Updates on Our Courses and Training at Bella Mai Academy

If you’ve been working in the aesthetics industry for a while, you’ve likely accumulated a folder full of CPD (Continuing Professional Development) certificates. You might have mastered various injectable techniques, skin boosters, or advanced facials through these short courses.

However, the landscape of aesthetics in the UK is changing rapidly. With the government’s move toward a formal licensing scheme, "short-course" CPD certificates are no longer the gold standard. To future-proof your career and ensure you are meeting the highest professional standards, the ProQual Level 7 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice is the goal—but there is a very specific pathway you must follow to get there.

The Misconception: "I’ve been injecting for years and already have CPD certificates for injectables, so why do I have to do Level 5 first?"

We often get asked by experienced practitioners if they can jump straight into the Level 7 qualification because they have years of experience or numerous CPD certificates in injectables.

The short answer is: No.

The ProQual Level 7 is an Ofqual-regulated qualification. Unlike CPD, which tracks time spent learning, Ofqual levels represent a regulated standard of academic and practical achievement. To enrol in the Level 7, you must demonstrate a foundation of regulated learning at the lower levels first.

Think of it like building a house; you cannot put the roof on (Level 7) or the first floor (Level 5) without a solid ground floor and foundation (Levels 3 and 4).

The Step-by-Step Level 7 Aesthetics Pathway:

How to read the Qualification Flowchart

To help you navigate the image, follow the lines that match your career goals:

  • The Black Route (Level 7 Aesthetics): This is the path for those aiming for injectables. Notice how the black lines flow vertically from your Level 3 foundation, through your chosen Level 4 "bridge," directly into Level 5 Aesthetic Practice, which is the only gateway to Level 7.

  • The Orange Route (Laser): If your goal is advanced laser hair removal or tattoo removal, follow the orange path. You will notice this route has different prerequisites, such as the "Core of Knowledge Laser Safety" module.

To reach the Level 7 Aesthetics qualification at Bella Mai Academy, here is the mandatory journey:

1. The Foundation: Ofqual Level 3

Before you can move into advanced aesthetics, you must hold a regulated Level 3 qualification.

2. The Bridge: Ofqual Level 4

Once you have your regulated Level 3, the next step is a regulated Level 4 qualification in a related sector.

At Bella Mai Academy, we offer several Level 4 routes that qualify you for Level 5 entry, including:

Note: Even if you have been doing these treatments for years via CPD certificates, you will need to "upgrade" to the Ofqual-regulated version to meet the entry requirements for Level 5.

3. The Safety Requirement: Valid First Aid

Before you can progress to the clinical stages of Level 5 and Level 7, there is one more essential "key" you must hold: A current and valid First Aid qualification.

To ensure client safety during advanced treatments, all students must hold one of the following Ofqual-regulated certificates:

  • Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work

  • Level 3 Award in Emergency First Aid

  • Level 3 Award in Adult Basic Life Support, AED, and Management of Anaphylaxis

If your First Aid has expired or is not an Ofqual-regulated version, you will need to complete this before you can begin your practical training.

4. The Prerequisite: ProQual Level 5 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice

This is where many students feel stuck, but it is a vital step. The Level 5 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice focuses on Microneedling and Chemical Peels.

Why do you have to do this if you want to do injectables? Because the Level 5 is the mandatory prerequisite for the Level 7. It proves you have the academic and clinical capability to handle advanced skin rejuvenation and complications at a high level. You cannot enrol in the Level 7 without first achieving your Level 5 (or a Level 6 equivalent).

5. The Goal: ProQual Level 7 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice

Once you have your Level 5 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice in hand, the door to Level 7 Diploma in Aesthetic Practice finally opens. This is where you gain your nationally recognised qualification in Botulinum Toxin and Dermal Fillers.

"But I’m already qualified in injectables via CPD!"

We understand it feels like going "backward" to do a Level 5 in Microneedling when you are already injecting. However, the upcoming UK licensing changes are expected to require regulated qualifications, not just attendance certificates.

  • CPD certificates are great for learning a new technique or product.

  • Ofqual Qualifications (Level 3-7) are what define your professional standing and your ability to be licensed by local authorities in the future.

By completing your Level 5 now, you aren't just learning microneedling and peels; you are unlocking the professional pathway to your Level 7.

Why is This Pathway So Strict?

The aesthetics industry is moving toward a tiered licensing system. The government’s recent announcements suggest that practitioners will be categorized based on their level of regulated training.

By following the Level 3 -> Level 4 -> Level 5 -> Level 7 pathway, you aren’t just "ticking a box."

You are:

  • Securing your insurance: Many insurers are now insisting on Ofqual-regulated qualifications rather than CPD.

  • Preparing for Licensing: When local authorities begin issuing licenses, they will look for regulated standards.

  • Building Clinical Excellence: Regulated courses require more in-depth study, assignments, and rigorous practical assessments than standard CPD.
